Yokuts

The Yokuts lived in tribes with their own villages and regions. Their homeland was the San Joaquin Valley and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. They lived along rivers and streams, hunting and gathering food and supplies.

Yokuts basketry was made primarily with tule using twine and coil techniques.

This Native American historic basket is decorated with tule lodge houses and figures. The shape of the basket is in the form of a tule lodge house. The houses were on the Upper Tule River and more nearly approached the shape of the great Indian tepees. Found at Tulare Lake, Tulare County, California Frank Latta Collection Diameter: 2 3/4in Height: 2in Face painting was an art form for the Yokuts, for both faces and bodies. Various designs were used in conjunction with different ceremonies and symbols of may families. The paint was mixed to the consistency of a thick grease, being a combination of elk tallow and bear oil.
