This Native American historic basket is decorated with tule lodge houses and figures. The shape of the basket is in the form of a tule lodge house. The houses were on the Upper Tule River and more nearly approached the shape of the great Indian tepees. This large Yokuts friendship olla basket is decorated in polychrome with 53 figures holding hands in the Friendship Dance. The basket also has three rattlesnake bands going around the sides and top. the rim has ticking. Woven by Mary Dick Topino (know as Mrs. Britches) 1868-1923. Found at Tulare Lake, Tulare County, California Frank Latta Collection Diameter: 2 3/4in Height: 2in Face painting was an art form for the Yokuts, for both faces and bodies. Various designs were used in conjunction with different ceremonies and symbols of may families. The paint was mixed to the consistency of a thick grease, being a combination of elk tallow and bear oil.
